by Sarah
(Maryland)

Hi Angela

I have a diagnosis of hyperthyroidism. However, it is not serious. I do not need to take medicine.

I heard that Propolis works for endocrine system. I want to try the propolis. Would you please let me know that how the propolis works for hyperthyroidism?

Thank you very much,

Sarah

Hashimato's and propolis
by: Sevilla

I started using water-based propolis to boost my immune system a while ago. However, I am also a Hashimato patient of nearly 16 years. On the second day of my usage of propolis (only ten drops) my body reacted very badly to propolis: extreme anxiety, increased and strong heart palpitations, restless legs and increased body heat. I got very scared. Is this an allergy reaction or a kind of warning that propolis should not be used in autoimmune thyroid disorders? Can it be that propolis increased thyroid antibodies while boosting immune system as a whole? Any ideas? Thanks!

Angela's comments:

Very difficult to say Sevilla but very wise move to discontinue use. My guess is that it was a strong immune reaction to the propolis.

Propolis for Hypothyroidism
by: Angela

Hi Sarah,
Great question. I am not aware of any research or studies on propolis and the thyroid suggesting it would be helpful. I do know of a study suggesting that propolis helps protect the thyroid (as an anti-oxidant). This might be helpful for hyperthyroidism but it is difficult to say for sure. It certainly wouldn't hurt.

Hope that helps and sorry I can't offer more.

Angela
