Raw honey health benefits date back in recorded history as far as 2600 - 2200 BC. Records show that it was prescribed to heal wounds, for pain management in the stomach and even to stimulate urination. Hippacrotes reportedly prescribed raw honey drinks to treat phlegm and to calm down coughs, which have recently been shown to work better than the most popular over-the-counter cough medications. He was reported to use raw honey and vinegar for pain and a water/honey mix for thirst and light fevers. A group of Israeli researchers reported in the American Journal of Surgery that "Topical application of raw, unboiled honey was observed to be effective in ulcers, infected wounds and burns. A Bulgarian study with over 17 000 people in it showed raw honey's effectiveness in treating diseases of the air passages. Chronic bronchitis, asthmatic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, chronic rhinitis, allergic rhinitis and sinusitis all responded very well to raw honey treatment. Yves Donadieu of France stated in his paper "The Use of Honey in Natural Therapeutics" that "honey has a light appetite stimulating effect and facilitates assimilation and digestion of other foods. It also has laxative, sedative, anti-toxic, antiseptic, anti-anemic, and fever reducing properties." Scientists recently investigated the potential health benefits of raw honey as a substitute for refined sugars and demonstrated that compared to sugar, honey may produce lower blood triglycerides. What they found was that total cholesterol tended to be lower in the honey fed mice. The results suggest that consuming raw honey may potentially promote lower cholesterol over a long term period. And how about a sleep aid? Mike McInnes, pharmacist, sports nutritionist, and author of The Hibernation Diet is a big proponent of using raw honey to promote and encourage more restful sleep. He goes on to state that: 1) honey provides enough glycogen (stored energy) for the liver over eight hours of sleep, which lessens the early morning release of cortisol and adrenalin (stress hormones); 2) honey stabilizes blood sugar levels; 3) honey contributes to the release of melatonin, the hormone required for recovery and rebuilding of body tissues during rest.
