Is propolis safe for babies?

by Marcella
(Jakarta, Indonesia)

Hi, I'm Marcella.
It's been a year that I became a fan of propolis. I want to know if it's ok to give it to my baby occasionally, just to maintain her health or to make her get better when she gets the cold/flu. I need to be sure if it's safe for her. Thank you.

Angela' Comments:

Hi Marcella,
Propolis is a very safe compound for most people and I do know of babies consuming it safely. However, I do encourage extreme caution when giving propolis to a baby. Start with very, very small amounts and very slowly increase the dose if the child tolerates the propolis well. Most people who have given propolis to their children use our powdered product. And I'd encourage you to let your Doctor or pharmacist know what you are doing or better yet, work with a Naturopathic Doctor to determine if propolis is suitable for your child.

Asthmatic child
by: Anonymous

I've just bought this product to help my daughter with her cold but wondering if anyone can't tell me if it's ok to give to her with her being asthmatic ? Can't find anywhere to say it's not but I'm careful what I give her.

Thanks

Angela's comments:

Asthmatic's do need to be very, very careful with bee products initially. Propolis is generally very well tolerated but if you decide to give it to her, test one drop with her to start. Carefully observe for any sign of allergy. If she she tolerates it well for several days in a row, consider increasing to two drops. Again, observe for allergy. Repeat this process until you reach the recommended daily dose. And, as always, best to inform your Doctor what you are administering to your child. Hope that helps!

Start with 1-2 drops per day. You can increase if he tolerates it well after one week.

Propolis for children - cold sores

My daughter has developed cold sores on her nose and outside mouth. I have been recommended propolis liquid. Is this suitable for my 4 year old daughter

Thank you Lisa Goodwin.

Angela's Comments:

Propolis is quite safe. Reactions to it are quite rare so if you are going to use it on your child, begin with a very small amount and if she tolerates it well, increase in small amounts daily until you reach the working dose recommended.

Angela

what amount of propolis can I give to an 11 month old?

What amount of propolis should i give to my 11 month old baby?

Hi Mary Rose,
I wouldn't recommend giving propolis to an 11 month old unless under the supervision of a medical professional. While very safe and reactions are very rare, it is best to be ultra safe with infants.

I have encountered customers who have safely given very, very small amounts of propolis to their young children in a 20% water based tincture (a drop or two). I don't recommend this but know it has been done.

Sorry I can be of more assistance.

Bee healthy,
Angela

Can i give propolis to my 9 month old baby

I use propolis all the time for myself. But i know you cant give honey to a child under 1 year. But can i give propolis. Like for sore throats.

Angela's Comments:

There is no definitive age minimum for propolis that I am aware of but I would say one year old is probably a safe age to start.

Propolis Tincture for 2 year old

I was wonder what dosage would be suitable to give to a toddler for general health and immune support? I was thinking of adding the tincture to his morning cereal along with some raw honey.

I got the capsules and was originally planning to take the propolis content out of the capsule and give a portion of it to my son; but then I realize it's not easy taking the propolis content out. Hence I am going to try the tincture (water base).

Thank you for your time,
a North Vancouver Mommy :)

Angela's Comments:

It is recommended to start with only one drop to ensure tolerance. Increase from there up to 3 - 5 drops daily.

Is propolis ok for a 2 year old?

by Vonnie
(Ireland )

I have purchase a proplis herbal elixir for myself as i have a very bad cough and also my daughter has now delveoped it too. She is 2 years and 1 month is ok to give it to a child of this age?

many thanks

Hi Vonnie,
Your two year old should be able to handle small amounts of propolis but be very careful and only start with very, very small micro doses to ensure she tolerates it well. Always let your Doctor know what you are taking as supplements as well.

For a 6yr old
by: Kathia

Hi, I've purchased some Propolis capsules for myself and just wanted to check if it was OK for me to give my 6 year old.
Thanks

Angela's comments:

Yes, most likely Kathia. As with anything, there is a small risk of allergy but you can minimize that by starting out giving your child a very tiny amount and then slowly increasing from there. Overall Propolis is very well tolerated.

question about the answer
by: Linda

Just wondering what you mean by 'tolerate it well'? I've given some to my daughter and wondering what symptoms might be of an adverse reation.

Angela's Comments:

Symptoms of an adverse reaction would be similar to an allergic reaction. So anything from a rash or respiratory issues to stomach ache/nausea/vomiting. Propolis is well tolerated in most people and side effects are quite rare.
